2020’s Rap Vocal Mix Chain

It’s a bit extra. But here we go, in order : )

airwindows PurestGain – Sets gain structure

iZotope RX 6 De-Ess – Spectral setting, general de-ess duties

airwindows Channel8 – SSL setting, drive at 100%. Gives some nice aggression

Reaper ReaEQ – High Pass Filter around 120Hz, fine tune to taste

soothe2 – The best vocal plugin in the ENTIRE world. Reduces honky resonances, tames biteyness, decent de-esser

neptune pitch adjuster and voice synth – hosted in Reason Rack Plugin, for a little bit of that “AutoTune sound”

Cakewalk RE-2A Leveling Amplifier – LA-2A clone, just shaving off a few dB, also hosted in Reason Rack Plugin

Slate Digital FG-N – General Neve style EQ and tone shaping duties

Slate Digital Custom Series Equalizer – Love the 4k and 7k bands for bringing a vocal forward, 12k and 15k for air

Slate Digital FG – 116 – Classic 1176 Style Compression. Their “Vocals” preset is a great starting point, then I speed up release if it’s a fast song

Slate Digital FG – 76 – Meaty sounding preamp, great for low voices

Slate Digital Virtual Channel – Brit 4kE Setting, Drive at 12dB

Waves Vocal Rider – Slow Setting, bring the gain range to +-3dB

airwindows Podcast – DON’T SLEEP ON THIS ONE, it’s five curve style compressors in a row with a ADClip circuit at the end. Brings a little dirt in a tasty way. Push boost slider until you hear consistent distortion, then back it off a bit. Blend in to taste.

Slate Digital Fresh Air – A new one that’s pretty unreal sounding and FREE. Think “sheen, gloss, air, expensive”

Baby Audio Magic Switch – A modeled Juno chorus, but warmer. It’s free, too. Blend in a touch

airwindows ToTape6 – Final clipping stage (it’s got the ADClip7 algorithm on the output), warm tape saturation
